With the advancement of the times and the development of science, modern people have increasingly come to recognize the relationship between scientific water consumption and healthy longevity. Meanwhile, severe water pollution is also drawing growing concern from people.
How can we ensure that people drink water free of pollution, consume fruits and vegetables with no pesticide residues*, and breathe air as fresh as that found by the seaside or in forests? That’s precisely where ozone water is ushering in a new revolution in disinfecting drinking water.
In fact, human survival studies have shown that a person can survive for several weeks without food—but if deprived of water, they will die of dehydration within just a few days. The vast majority of our body is composed of water, making it an extremely important nutrient for the human body. Within the body, water dissolves nutrients from food as well as various metabolic byproducts, and serves as the medium through which numerous biochemical reactions take place. Water helps maintain digestive and absorptive functions in the body; like blood and lymph fluid, it lubricates joints and internal organs, ensuring their proper functioning.
The deterioration of the current living environment is humanity’s greatest challenge. Due to air pollution, the incidence of respiratory diseases among humans has been steadily rising in recent years, and the environment has already sent us a strong warning signal. For example, pollution caused by home renovations frequently leads to headaches, nausea, fatigue, and drowsiness among people; thus, household environmental protection has now been placed squarely on the agenda.
Moreover, the massive generation of industrial wastewater and industrial waste has polluted rivers, lakes, seas, and groundwater, causing severe damage to the water resources upon which we depend for our survival. In order to meet the soaring food demands brought about by the rapid population growth, people have been forced to rely heavily on chemical fertilizers, growth hormones, and pesticides to boost agricultural and livestock production. The residual pesticides and growth hormones are now harming our bodies.
Speaking of the issue of “vegetables treated with pesticides,” it’s truly alarming. In recent years, China has repeatedly experienced incidents of food poisoning caused by consuming vegetables sprayed with pesticides. The long-term accumulation of pesticide residues in the human body can lead to numerous chronic diseases—most notably cancer, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, and diabetes.
An increasing number of people suffering from environmental pollution have become acutely aware that if humanity fails to find effective solutions to pollution, we and our future generations will continue to be endlessly plagued by its harmful effects, ultimately threatening the very survival of humankind.
★ So, do humans have any effective solutions to these problems?
Ozone is a naturally occurring, unstable gas that can also be produced artificially. In the atmosphere, oxygen molecules are split into atomic oxygen by ultraviolet radiation from the sun. These atomic oxygen atoms then combine with other oxygen molecules to form ozone, thereby creating the ozone layer in the atmosphere. Currently, an environmentally friendly method for artificially producing ozone involves using a novel PEM membrane to electrolyze deionized water at low voltage and under direct current conditions, with solid-state membrane electrodes serving as the positive and negative poles. At the special anode-solution interface, water is separated into hydrogen and oxygen molecules via proton exchange. Hydrogen is directly released from the cathode solution interface, while oxygen molecules, upon being excited by electrons generated under high-density current at the anode interface, gain energy and subsequently combine to form ozone molecules. When ozone is used to treat water, it can effectively kill bacteria and viruses, thus achieving the goal of purifying water quality. For this reason, some people say that drinking ozonated water could become a fashionable choice in the future.
★★ What are the advantages of ozone water compared to other types of water?
According to the introduction, the water commonly consumed in daily life—namely, raw water (tap water)—is treated with bleaching powder during disinfection. The active ingredient in this process is chlorine. Through a series of chemical reactions, chlorine reacts with organic substances in the water to produce chloroform, a substance that is a serious carcinogen. Moreover, raw water can also become contaminated during transportation due to numerous factors such as pipes, water tanks, and water towers, which may harbor chemicals, viruses, and bacteria.
Second, there’s the boiled water we drink every day. However, the concentration of the carcinogen trichloromethane in boiled water generally increases as the water temperature rises. Moreover, boiled water also produces large amounts of scale and alkaline deposits, which can lead to the formation of kidney stones in the human body.
The third type of drinking water is purified water. In recent years, research has shown that while purified water removes bacteria, viruses, and various impurities from water, it also eliminates trace elements that are beneficial to human health; therefore, it is not advisable to drink it over the long term. On the other hand, ozonated water possesses bactericidal properties and is rich in oxygen and a variety of trace elements. It can effectively kill viruses such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Escherichia coli, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Salmonella typhi, making it a popular and high-quality drinking water option.
