I. Equipment Parameters and Model

The emergence of third-generation ozone technology—the PEM electrolysis ozone generation technology—has greatly expanded the application fields of ozone. By overcoming the various drawbacks of the traditional high-voltage corona discharge method, this technology is currently the world’s most advanced and leading-edge method for producing healthy ozone. It generates no secondary pollution, emits no electrostatic radiation, and operates with minimal noise. Moreover, the core electrode of its central generator is non-consumable, resulting in low operating costs. The ozone concentration produced by this technology is more than six times higher than that produced by the traditional high-voltage corona discharge method. In particular, the ozone generated contains neither nitrogen oxides nor volatile organic pollutants—substances specifically identified by national environmental monitoring agencies—as a result, this technology truly qualifies as an environmentally friendly, low-carbon, and energy-efficient product. Consequently, its application scope is even broader, making it an inevitable trend in the development of ozone generation technologies.

II. Low-pressure Electrolytic Ozone Generator

The low-pressure electrolysis ozone generator is a medium- and small-sized device with relatively low output but exceptionally high ozone concentration. The unit of ozone concentration commonly used internationally is volume percentage. For corona-discharge air-source ozone generators, the concentration typically ranges from 1% to 3%; for oxygen-source ozone generators, it ranges from 2% to 6%. In contrast, low-pressure electrolysis ozone generators can achieve concentrations as high as 18% to 20%. Domestically, concentrations are usually expressed in units of mg/L or mg/m³. Specifically, corona-discharge air-source ozone generators produce concentrations ranging from 10 to 40 mg/L, oxygen-source ozone generators yield concentrations from 20 to 80 mg/L, and pure-water electrolysis ozone generators generate concentrations between 250 and 280 mg/L. Low-pressure electrolysis ozone generators feature low energy consumption, high safety, and stable performance. Notably, the ozone they produce contains neither nitrogen oxides nor volatile organic pollutants—substances identified by national environmental monitoring agencies as potential hazards. As a result, these generators have gained widespread popularity among both domestic and international customers.

The main advantages of the new low-pressure electrolytic ozone generator are: it produces ozone with high purity and high concentration (18-20% by weight at low pressure, and 1-3% by weight at high pressure); the ozone produced contains no nitrogen oxides (especially no carcinogenic substances such as nitric oxide or nitrogen dioxide); it does not generate electromagnetic interference; it has low overall operating costs and excellent safety performance; its operation is unaffected by environmental conditions (including ambient humidity up to 90% and ambient temperature); and it can operate continuously for extended periods.

The new low-pressure electrolytic ozone application in water treatment has the following more prominent features: 1. Since the ozone is extracted from pure water, the ozone produced contains no other impurities such as nitrogen oxides (especially no carcinogenic substances like nitrogen dioxide), does not generate nitrites, and thus does not affect water quality. 2. It has a humidity resistance of up to 90%. The modular electrolysis principle is not easily affected by moisture and will not experience dielectric breakdown. 3. The electrodes operate at a low voltage of 3–5V with minimal power consumption, enabling continuous operation, offering excellent safety performance, and boasting an exceptionally long service life. 4. The ozone concentration produced is high (18–20% for low-pressure ozone, 1–3% for high-pressure ozone). For the same amount of ozone introduced into the water, this method can achieve a significantly higher ozone concentration in the water. 5. The overall operating cost is low; for the same water flow rate and achieving the same ozone concentration, the cost is less than half that of high-pressure equipment.

III. Selection of Ozone Generators

Currently, most ozone generators in China employ a high-frequency, high-voltage corona discharge method that uses air as the feedstock to produce ozone. A serious issue arising from this type of ozone generator is the excessive production of nitrogen oxides. Since air contains more than 78% nitrogen, when exposed to a high-voltage discharge environment, nitrogen molecules dissociate into atoms, which then preferentially combine with oxygen to form highly toxic nitrogen oxides (NOx). Among the NOx produced by high-voltage corona-discharge air-source ozone generators, nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) is the predominant component. Specifically: 1. NO₂ is poorly soluble in water and readily penetrates the lower respiratory tract, reaching deep into the lungs. Once it reaches the alveoli, NO₂ slowly dissolves in body fluids, forming nitrous acid, nitric acid, and their respective salts. These substances, in the form of nitrite and nitrate ions, enter the bloodstream via the lungs and are distributed throughout the body, causing damage to organs such as the kidneys, liver, and heart. Moreover, NO₂ itself exerts a strong irritant and corrosive effect on lung tissue, leading to pulmonary edema. 2. Impairment of immune function: Long-term exposure to NO₂ not only reduces the phagocytic capacity of alveolar macrophages but also inhibits the formation of antibodies in the serum, thereby compromising the body's immune defenses. 3. Carcinogenic effects: Animal experiments have shown that NO₂ has both promoting and carcinogenic effects. Furthermore, the ozone generator market in China today is rife with a wide variety of products, many of which emerge continuously, with widely varying product quality. Many people mistakenly believe that as long as ozone is produced, everything is fine, overlooking the fact that nitrogen oxides—often referred to as the "silent killer"—pose a significant health hazard to humans. Particularly with some low-priced ozone generators, due to their simple configurations and inferior materials, these devices tend to generate large amounts of nitrogen oxides (NOx) along with ozone. Therefore, choosing a high-quality ozone generator is extremely important.

Meanwhile, in water treatment, nitrogen oxides dissolve in water to form nitrites when ozone is used for water purification or during routine maintenance of plumbing systems. The most important mineral form of nitrogen is nitrate. This leads to excessive levels of nitrites, which can further interact with contaminants in plumbing pipes or with hormones and antibiotics present in the pipes, generating additional harmful substances in the process. Such interactions are detrimental to the purification and disinfection of the water circulation system.

IV. Advantages of Low-Pressure Electrolytic Ozone Generation

Performance and Features of Low-Pressure Electrolysis

1. The resulting ozone concentration, by weight, is several times higher than that produced by the high-voltage corona method (reaching up to 20%).

2. The ozone gas produced contains no nitrogen oxides and no carcinogenic substances.

3. It employs a low-voltage electrolysis principle (3–5V), eliminating any risk of electrical hazards. It does not generate electromagnetic waves or noise, and when operating alongside other precision instruments, it causes no interference.

4. The ozone generator uses pure water as its gas source and does not require an oxygen source or any additional equipment external to the high-pressure ozone unit during operation, making it easy to operate and safe and reliable.

5. Low electrode wear, continuous operation capability, and ultra-long service life.

6. It is unaffected by the working environment and temperature, with a humidity resistance of up to 85%.

7. The pure water self-circulation cooling system eliminates the risk of overheating caused by continuous operation of the equipment.

8. Due to the high ozone concentration generated, using this method with the same amount of ozone introduced into water can achieve a higher ozone concentration in the water.
